When it comes to love, there are many ways for us to express our affection. Often, we are so accustomed to conveying our thoughts through structured essays designed to educate or inform, pithy one-to-ten-word phrases on social media, or even the hybrid genre of how-to or list essays. Each form serves its purpose and value in our dly lives. However, I want to emphasize another less conventional method that has become somewhat obsolete amid the hustle and bustle of modern communication - writing from a place of vulnerability and flow.
Writing from this deeper emotional space allows us to move beyond the boundaries of academic structure, bypassing perfectionism, and embracing the rawness and authenticity of our feelings. It's about putting down words that are not just about describing situations but are born out of them. Imagine sitting quietly, allowing your thoughts and emotions to guide your pen as you create a letter filled with love and gratitude.
The first story I want to share comes from when I wrote a heartfelt note to my mother, acknowledging her journey through challenges and celebrating the strength that she embodies. The act of conveying how much she means to me, showing up for her birthday despite distance, bridged the gap using nothing but words. My mother cherished this handwritten card, turning it back on herself as a source of solace and comfort.
In another instance, I found myself grappling with how to connect with my neighbor who was facing an imping life passage following her husband's passing. The complexity of dealing with death and not knowing what you can do or say makes it challenging for us as a society. But this situation taught me that genuine connection is possible even in times of great uncertnty, and kindness comes in various forms.
I wrote to my neighbor about our shared experiences at yoga, her engaging spirit towards life, the connections she has with the community and family, and how she fits into every space she enters, making bridges as she goes. By hand, I poured out these thoughts onto paper, feeling a profound intimacy with her that transced mere acquntanceship.
In writing such love letters, you don't have to capture life in its entirety through essays or lists. It's about diving deep into your feelings and letting the words flow unstructuredly as they come from a place of love while navigating through uncertnties. Writing isn't just about capturing moments; it can be an act of sing love and support when you're not sure how else to show up.
Life is rich with both sweetness and complexity, filled with moments that can be joyous or sorrowful, chaotic or calm, perfect or imperfect. As writers, we might struggle at times to encapsulate its full spectrum. But perhaps the best lesson to learn is to practice writing love letters, allowing yourself to let your tears flow freely onto the page.
